The Civil WarDuring the Civil war the bridge was defended unsuccessfully by the royalists who were heavily outnumbered by the parliamentarians. Even today cannon balls are found in local gardens. The royalists were the Harpur Crewe family and the ruins of their house can still be seen along the river bank. Their summer house still remains (1630) and is a splendid example of 17th century architecture. The Parish Church contains the famous alabaster Harpur Crewe tombs
